Activities of Pakistan Endocrine Society during the last year

A CME was organized by the Punjab chapter in Lahore in January 2007. The meeting was attended by Dr. Abbas Raza, Dr. Shahid Mahmood, Dr. Ali Jawa, and Dr. Zakir Alavi. Dr. Abbas Raza gave a lecture on the cost effective ways of assessment of thyroid nodules, Dr. Shahid Mahmood delivered an interesting talk on the metabolic syndrome, its consequences and management. Dr. Ali Jawa spoke about the use of growth hormone. Dr. Zakir Alavi gave a talk on choosing the right lipid lowering therapy. The program was attended by a large numbers of GPs and residents and followed by an enthusiastic question-answer session.

A Second CME was organized by the PES in February 2007 at Nawabshah. CME was attended by a large number of local doctors. In this CME Dr. Khurram Shahid gave a talk on the management of hyperthyroidism, Dr. Jamal Raza talked on the diagnosis and management of type 1 diabetes mellitus, and Professor Shams Sheikh gave an overview of diabetic complications. In April 2007 PES organized a CME in Multan where Dr. Saeed Mehar talked about the hidden health problems related to hypothyroidism, Dr. Abbas Raza elaborated the problems related to andropause, Dr. Yaqoob Ahmedani talked about the Metabolic Syndrome which is considered to be major public health problem of this century, followed by a talk on the Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome by Dr. Faisal Masood who was the local speaker from Multan.

In June 2007 a CME was held at PIMS where Dr. Jaweed Akhter talked about osteoporosis and its management, Dr. Aisha Sheikh gave an approach to diagnose Cushing Syndrome and Dr. Khalid Imam highlighted the various aspects of the management of Grave’s hyperthyroidism.

5th National Endocrine symposium was the mega event of the year. This symposium was held at Hotel Pearl Cntinental, Lahore on 1st and 2nd September 2007. Dr. Sadaf Farooqui from Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge was the guest speaker. She delivered a comprehensive talk on causes and consequences of severe obesity and shared her views on various genetic aspects of this metabolic disease. Speakers from all over the country participated in the symposium. It was a very successful event attended by a large number of doctors.

In December, a CME was organized in Larkana where Dr. Zakir Alavi, Dr. Saeed Mehar and Dr. Wazir Muhammad Sheikh were the speakers.

In the current year, Pakistan Endocrine Society organized an ‘Advance Course in Endocrinology’ held at the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan on 18th and 19th April. Family Physicians and Postgraduate students attended two-day session of the advance course. Certificates were distributed at the end of the program. Society has planned 6th National Endocrine symposium, many CMEs, and public awareness program in the current year.
